What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Clinical studies have shown laser hair removal to be more effective, faster
and less painful than using the more traditional electrolysis route.
Laser hair removal works by sending light energy from the
laser directly into the hair follicle. The light energy is absorbed by
the melanin in the hair and transformed into heat energy. The heat damages
the bulge and bulb of the hair follicle, ending the hair growth. The laser
works on numerous hair follicles simultaneously and can work on large
areas such as the back, legs, or arms just as easily as small areas such
as the underarms, upper lip or the bikini line.
Your Treatment
Our
lasers allow us to work on patients with tans, however, we strongly recommend
that you keep treated areas out of the sun prior to undergoing laser treatment.
By keeping out of the sun you will minimize possible side effects to the
skin which can be caused by the laser. During your treatment, we ask that you not wear makeup,
deodorant, perfumes or powder on the areas to be treated. After the treatment
you will be able to return to your everyday life.

Who Can Be Treated?
The unique design and long wavelength allow the laser to treat patients
of all skin tones and types including African American, Asian, Indian,
Hispanic, Caucasian, and even patients with a suntan!
What Areas Can Be Treated?
The CoolGlide Laser System can remove hair from all parts of the body including
the face, legs, arms, underarms, and back. It can also treat sensitive
areas like the chest, nipples, and bikini line.
What Do Treatments Feel Like?
The handpiece cools and soothes as it glides along your skin. When the
pulse of light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching
or stinging sensation. No local anesthesia or pain medication is typically
required, however some patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic
when sensitive areas are treated.
How
Many Treatments Do I Need?
Most areas require 3-12 treatments, but the number of treatments you may
require for optimal long-term benefits depends on various factors such
as your hair's thickness, the area treated, and your hair's growth cycle.
Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, but
actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting.
Our treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active
growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this
active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary
to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.
What Happens After The Treatment?
Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear a bit red and
swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems
to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as
a result of your treatment, and are not regrowing. In-between treatments
you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.
Are There Any Restrictions On My Activity After
Treatment?
Following the treatment, you can return to your normal activities right
away. However, since some redness may occur, you may want to plan your
work or social engagements accordingly. The use of sunscreen is recommended
on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is a good idea
to limit your sun exposure. If your physician has recommended that you use
a specially formulated skin care product line or prescribed a skin care
regimen, you may continue with these skin care programs.
What Are The Possible Side Effects?
Slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn
may occur in some patients. These effects typically last for several hours
or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with our medical
staff for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
How Long Do The Results Last?
The CoolGlide Laser System causes permanent reduction in the number of hairs growing
in an area. Because hair grows in three phases, and each hair goes through
these stages independently, it is almost impossible for one laser treatment
to permanently reduce all hair in a given area. Clinical studies, which
have followed patients for one year after completing two treatments, have
shown that reduction in hair growth was stable for the duration of that
time. While individual results may vary, patients typically find that
it takes 3 to 12 treatments to get the desired results.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Compare With
Other Hair Removal Methods?
Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which
must be repeated on a frequent basis. Laser hair removal offers longer
lasting results for your hair removal needs.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Compare With Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive, and painful process that involves
inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle, and delivering
an electrical charge to them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires
years of treatments at regular intervals. By delivering light energy to
hundreds of hair follicles at a time, laser hair removal effectively treats
an area that would take over an hour with electrolysis, in just seconds.
